With students around the county receiving their Junior Certificate results today (Wednesday) Gardai have issued a reminder to the publicans as regards the importance of ensuring alcohol sold is not destined to be consumed by underage students celebrating their results.

A Garda spokesperson in Carrick-on-Shannon said, “Publicans and those operating off licences should exercise due diligence when selling large quantities of alcohol. They should endeavour to ensure that alcohol is not for consumption by people not entitled to it.”

That point was made in respect of customers who may be over the legal age to purchase alcohol but could in fact be buying the drink for underage people.

The Garda spokesperson added, “We intend to visit the licenced premises and we thank the premises for their co-operation in the past and hope that continues.”
