Carrick Rowing Club

Carrick Rowing Club made the short journey to Sligo town on Saturday January 26 last for the first event of 2013.

The Head of the Garavogue is run by Sligo Rowing Club as a time trial over two events, in the morning and afternoon and regularly attracts a large entry from across Connacht. This year, Carrick entered a range of crews across categories and age ranges and were delighted to finish the day with a number of wins.

The morning trial, over 3.5 kilometers saw many of Carrick’s single scullers in action alongside junior 16 and junior 18 women’s crews. The junior 18 women’s crew of Caroline Kelly, Kate McCabe, Cheralyn Mulvey and Niamh Murray were unlucky to finish second, a mere five seconds behind a fancied Portora crew while the junior 16 crew of Laureen Gannon, Caroline Kelly, Ella Brogan, Jordyn Mulvey and Eimear Fitzgerald again showed their progress in their age group with a strong time on the day.

There was more success in the single sculls with wins for Oisin Griffin in the novice single scull, Stephen Carty in the junior 18 scull, Dara Hartigan in the junior 16 scull and Padraig Leyden in the men’s intermediate scull.

Congratulations to all winners and to Kieran Hynes for coaching all of the above crews. A special mention too for Emer Flynn who made her sculling debut for Carrick and put in a very strong performance in far from ideal water.

Unfortunately, the cold and blustery conditions of the morning deteriorated over the lunch break and the course was deemed unrowable in the interests of safety by early afternoon.

This was of course disappointing for all crews, but particularly so for Enda Molloy, William Clinton, Mark Lavin, Stephen Carty and Ryan Goldrick who were due to make their own debut in the men’s novice quad. The lads will have to wait for our own Head of the River in four weeks time to get their first race under their belts.

Thanks are due to all parents and supporters who travelled to Sligo on the day and to John Lowe for towing the trailer.
