Drumkeerin far too strong

A rampant Drumkeerin team proved much too strong for Fenagh in the Annaduff Credit Union U-14 Championship 11-a-side Final in Leitrim Gaels on Friday evening last.

ANNADUFF CREDIT UNION LADIES U-14 11-A-SIDE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

DRUMKEERIN 9-11

FENAGH 1-10

Backboned by a number of players from the All Ireland winning shield team, the victors had too much power for a younger Fenagh team who battled bravely but were unable to match the power and skill of an excellent Drumkeerin team.

In very damp conditions, Shauna Clancy opened the scoring for Drumkeerin in the second minute with a point from play and another one a minute later as a Fenagh attack broke down.

Fenagh midfielder Shauna McLoughlin replied with a point after a long run downfield after five minutes but a mistake in the Fenagh defence led to a Clancy point from a free. A minute later Fenagh failed to clear a sideline ball and Ann Marie Gallagher hit opening goal from the loose ball. This started a four goal spree for the north Leitrim team between the ninth and fifteenth minute as Clancy hit the back of the net twice and Gallagher hit her second following a great move involving Clancy.

Gallagher then found the range with two excellent long range points as Fenagh continued to struggle to gain possession. Michaelaigh Nolan got on the scoresheet for Drumkeerin with yet another goal and then hit two unanswered points.

Martina Gallagher hit the back of the net and further points from Nolan (2) and Clancy put further daylight between the teams. Fenagh eventually broke down a solid Drumkeerin defence as Shauna McLoughlin hit two points to leave the half time score 6-10 to 0-3.

With Fenagh having the aid of the wind in the second half, they competed much better as the excellent Shauna McLoughlin hit four points from play in the first seven minutes. Drumkeerin replied with a second Martina Gallagher goal but almost immediately McLoughlin hit the back of the net to give Fenagh some hope.

This was as good as it got for Fenagh as Shauna Glancy was back on the score-sheet again with another unstoppable effort to the back of the net. Fenagh continued to press forward and Kate Byrne was in excellent form to stop a second McLoughlin effort.

Amy McLoughlin then moved forward to point for play for Fenagh and sister Shauna also pointed as the game reached its conclusion.

Following a second excellent save from Byrne, Amy McLoughlin pointed a 30 metre free. The last score of the game came from Drumkeerin sub, Linda McCabe, a goal in injury time as Drumkeerin ran out deserved winners.

The Annaduff Credit Union Cup was presented to Drumkeerin by Bridie Shanley on behalf of the sponsors.
