Drumkeerin too strong for neighbours Glera
Ballinaglera proved to be no match for their neighbours Drumkeerin when the sides met in Sunday evening's lively GWP Intermediate Championship final Group Three game in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada.
GWP INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP
DRUMKEERIN 2-13
BALLINAGLERA 1-8
Drumkeerin's eight point winning margin over the 'Glera men enabled them to win Group Three at the expense of Cloone with whom they drew their first Group Three game.
It means that Fenagh St. Caillin's will be Drumkeerin's opponents in Saturday's quarter-final in Drumshanbo while Ballinaglera must face into a relegation play-off to avoid the drop to the Junior ranks.
Ballinaglera faltered visibly after making a good start in Sunday's game. A 14th minute Stephen Gilhooley goal put Drumkeerin in command and forced Ballinaglera to play second fiddle for the remainder of the showdown.
After Drumkeerin got on top, they played some free flowing football. Ballinaglera found great difficulty in their attempts to slow down the pace of the exchanges once Drumkeerin got motoring.
Colm Maguire edged Ballinaglera into a two point lead in the opening seven minutes after he tapped over a free and added a point from play. But Drumkeerin got on level terms by the 10th minute after Edward McTiernan converted a free and found the target from play.
Aidan Dolan put Drumkeerin ahead for the first time in the game when he shot over from play in the 13th minute.
The score that changed the course the game came within the space of another minute when Stephen Gilhooley flicked the ball to the Ballinaglera net over the head of advancing keeper Alan McGovern.
Colm Clarke and Jason Beirne shot over in turn to put Drumkeerin into a six point lead by 19th minute. But 'Glera sub Hugh Gilmartin cut the deficit slightly over the next five minutes when he fired over a pair of points.
Gilhooley hit back to keep Drumkeerin on top with a 24th minute point. Before the interval Damien McGourty answered with a similar Ballinaglera score, which left Drumkeerin leading by 1-6 to 0-5 at the break.
Ballinaglera closed the gap to two points within three minutes of the restart after Damien McGourty and Colm Maguire converted a free each. But over the next 16 minutes Drumkeerin killed off the Ballinaglera come back with four unanswered points.
Edward McTiernan shot over from a free and play for Drumkeerin while Ciaran White also hit the target from a 55 metre free and sub John Cullen fired over from play.
Ballinaglera registered their first score in 21 minutes when Colm Maguire tapped over a 54th minute free, which cut Drumkeerin's lead back to five points.
However Drumkeerin pulled away decisively once more over the next six minutes when adding a further 1-2 to their tally. John Cullen finished to the Ballinaglera net after keeper Alan McGovern failed to hold onto a ball that dropped short into his hands while Edward McTiernan converted two frees also.
In injury time, Colm Maguire managed to flick a ball into the Drumkeerin net from close range for a consolation goal for Ballinaglera. But Drumkeerin still had the last word and answered the goal with a John Cullen point from play just before the final whistle.
