All too easy for Melvin Gaels

Melvin Gaels saw the good times continue to roll last Saturday when their U-16 footballers swamped an out-classed Kiltubrid in the B Championship Final in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada.

From the word go, Melvin Gaels were far superior in all departments to a game Kiltubrid who fought and fought but couldn’t match the overall strength of the Kinlough men who, it has to be said from their League victory earlier this year, never really got out of third first gear.

With a defence that never allowed Kiltubrid a true sniff of a chance, Melvin Gaels dominated possession and could have had a far bigger score had they really pushed for it.

With Glencar/Manor’s facile win over Fenagh a week previously in the C Final and Melvin Gaels destruction of Kiltubrid, you really have to wonder at the grading of clubs at this level as there was a severe lack of competition in these finals.

Best for a Melvin Gaels side who didn’t have to hit top gear were Damien Hughes, Padraig Sheridan, Dara Sweeney, Joe Connolly & Matthew Cleary while Donal McNulty, Shane Meehan and Stephen McLoughlin battled hard for Kiltubrid.

Melvin Gaels got off to a bright opening with Matthew Cleary (free) and Taylor Simpson pointing in the first two minutes but with the Kinlough youngsters missing some good chances and Kiltubrid keeper Declan Kelly keeping his goal intact, the Gaels had to wait 11 minutes before Damien Hughes soloed through to score.

Another Cleary free was cancelled by Kiltubrid’s first score on 17 minutes, a Stephen McLoughlin free, but the Gaels killed off any hope when Padraig Sheridan ran onto a long ball and drilled a low shot to the net on 19 minutes.

Joe Connolly and Declan Clancy extended the Gaels lead with five minutes to go with Declan Kelly doing well to keep a fisted effort from Clancy from crossing the line, with Stephen McLoughlin finishing the scoring to leave the halftime score at 1-6 to 0-2 in favour of Melvin Gaels.

Kiltubrid had a chance to cut the gap when they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Shane Meehan but the spot-kick was tipped over the bar by keeper Michael Neil Gallagher. Kiltubrid made a bit more of a fight of it with only a Dara Rooney point for Melvin Gaels in the first ten minutes.

Damien Hughes blocked a shot from Meehan and Melvin Gaels went straight down the field where Matthew Cleary hit a well-taken goal on 12 minutes. Liam Ryan & Joe Connolly added points before Cleary got his second goal of the contest.

Points from Dara Rooney & Declan Clancy followed before Joe Connolly finished off an easy win when he drilled home a shot after a free was batted down to him.
