With a two point victory and two precious National League Division 4 points secured it was understandable that Leitrim joint manager Barney Breen was in an upbeat mood when talking after his side got the better of Carlow on Sunday last.

The hard fought nature of the game, with little to separate the sides didn’t surprise Barney who felt mistakes made a week previously had been addressed.

“ It was a hard fought battle but we knew coming here it wasn’t going to be easy. We came up last night (Saturday) and were able to sit down and have a frank discussion about where we want to go and reflect on last week, take the positives out of last week and concentrate on them today and iron out the negatives that we had and I thought that was good.

“It was a hard battle, we’ve said it all along, dare I be ‘Devil’s Advocate’ but Kilkenny are probably going to be the only easy game we’ll have. Every other game is going to be a battle like that. The fact that we came out on the better end of it was encouraging.”

Emphasising the significance of the victory Barney said, “ It’s more than two points to us, for morale it was important. In that sense we are delighted to get it, we’re going in to the break in a positive frame. We’ll get a lot of work done in the next couple of weeks and there’ll be a pep in our step.”

One player who shone brightly for Leitrim throughout the game was Annaduff’s Ray Cox and Barney was quick to pay tribute to the corner forward.

“Ray Cox had a fantastic game today, man of the match by a long shot. I’m delighted for him because he is a confidence player and that will bring him up no end. I’m delighted for him because he absolutely tore them to shreds today.”
