Ladies host Down in opening league fixture

The Leitrim ladies begin their Bord Gáis Energy NFL Division 3 campaign on Sunday next when they host Down in Ballinamore, throw-in 2pm.

Having narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs last year team, manager Niall Kilcrann will be hoping the team can at least secure a top four finish this year.

Westmeath and Wicklow are regarded as the teams to watch in Division 3, having won All-Ireland Championships last year in their respective grades but Armagh and Leitrim will both be very much in contention.

As has been the case with the mens football team, the ladies have lost players over the winter months but there is still a very strong spine to the team and the formidable midfield partnership of Sinead Fowley and Deirdre Ward will ensure Leitrim have a big say in the destination of this year’s Division 3 title.

Last year’s campaign in the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship, which was ended by Cavan in the semi-final after extra-time gave Aine Tighe the opportunity to show her capabilities to a national audience and her ability in front of goal is sure to cause concern for all other teams in Division 3.

Sunday’s game in Ballinamore signals the start of a new year for the county ladies team and all support for the team would no doubt be greatly appreciated as they look to begin the campaign on winning note.
