Ladies manager Niall Kilcrann pleased with emphatic win

Leitrim manager Niall Kilcrann issues instructions from the sideline during last Sunday's Bord Gais Division 3 match against Down

Speaking after his side’s comprehensive 16 point win over Down in Sunday’s Bórd Gáis Ladies National Football League Division 3, Leitrim boss Niall Kilcrann told the Leitrim Observer that he was pleased with his side’s performance, praising the cut-throat attitude of Leitrim’s forward line, the energy of his midfield and the tenacity and hard work of his back line.

Áine Tighe’s three goals and six points were the main talking point of the victory, but Kilcrann also had a special word for energetic midfielder Sineád Fowley. She was a constant thorn in the side of not just the opposition defence, but also their attack as she, along with her partner in the centre Deirdre Ward continuously looked to break up any Down attacks as they formed. “She was exceptional today”, says Niall. “The amount of ground she covers in ridiculous and like all the other girls, she never stopped from the first to last whistle.”

Niall was pleased to start this year’s campaign so well after last year’s disappointment. “It’s a good start and it certainly counts somewhat as revenge for last year’s defeat to them (Down) on the last day of the league games. We only have three home games this campaign, so it was vitally important to get all the points here.”

Leitrim Ladies’ next game is in Collooney on Sunday as they take on Sligo at Owenmore Gaels’ pitch in Toberbride and Niall knows that scoring five goals against a Sligo side is a totally different proposition. “This will be a tough one. Sligo are a totally different team and we won’t be taking anything for granted against them. You hit the net five times against Down, but maybe not against a team like Sligo, but we’ll go there and give it a go.”
