Mohill attack sees them home in derby Final
Mohill Community College claimed this year’s Tumble Jungle Connacht LGFA Post Primary School D Shield on Monday afternoon after a 2-13 to 4-2 victory over Lough Allen College, Drumkeerin at Shane McGettigan Park in Drumshanbo.
Mohill benefited from some fine scoring from forwards Nadine Hackett and Lorraine Moran who racked up a goal and seven points between them. Drumkeerin fought bravely, with Leitrim Senior squad member Ann-Marie Gallagher scoring two goals, but ultimately, it was the movement of the Mohill attack that saw them over the line.
Despite being second best for the majority of the game, it was Drumkeerin who took the lead through Mary Clancy with 25 seconds gone. Mohill pulled level two minutes later through Nadine Hackett who, despite calls from Lorraine Moran who was unmarked in the square, hit the first point of the game.
Drumkeerin keeper Kate Byrne made several fantastic saves throughout the tie and her first came in the fifth minute when Claire Byrne slipped Moran through one on one, Byrne doing well to get a strong hand in front of a low shot. She repeated the trick only seconds later when it was Hackett’s turn to go through clear on goal.
Mohill’s luck changed over the next five minutes as they opened up a four point lead courtesy of two points from Hackett and point each from Moran and midfielder Aileen Flynn.
Mohill were dominant but failed to really make it show. Drumkeerin did close the gap to a point on 19 minutes when the ball squeezed between two Mohill defenders inside the sqaure, Tara Drugan was the closest player to the goal and she blasted home unmarked to leave the score at 0-5 to 1-1 at half time.
Both sides passed up good scoring chances inside the first two minutes of the second half as both Lorraine Moran and Shauna Clancy did well to find themselves in good positions. Mohill registered their first point of the second half through Flynn, as she ghosted past Deirdre Devitt and found the posts.
Hackett added to her personal tally a minute later when her shot hit the post and bounced the right side of the Drumkeeerin post. Shauna Clancy relieved the pressure on Drumkeerin with six minutes elapsed to put two points between the teams but points from Flynn, Moran, Caoimhe McGuinness and captain Katie Tyrell left five scores in the tie.
The south Leitrim side continued to control the game and it looked even tougher for Drumkeerin to come back with 41 minutes played as Moran scored her and her side’s only goal of the game. Claire Byrne battled past three defenders before finding her prolific team mate in front of goal. Moran looked as if she was aiming above the post, but the ball took a wicked change of direction and looped past Byrne in the Drumkeerin goal to put nine points in the game at 1-11 to 1-2.
But the north Leitrim school showed great character to stage a mini-revival, scoring three goals in the final ten minutes of play. The game was suspended for 11 minutes when forward Tara Drugan had to be stretchered off with just six minutes of normal time left to play after she was fouled just outside the Mohill square and fell awkwardly on her back.
Ann-Marie Gallagher took the free and her fierce shot took a deflection off Laura Sweeney’s crossbar before landing behind the goal line. A goal a piece from sub Gemma McLoughlin and a second from Gallagher on 60 and 63 minutes respectively wasn’t enough to catch Mohill. Caoimhe McGuinness added a twelfth score between the goals on 59 minutes, Mohill finishing the game with a five point win.
