O’Neill a major doubt for Leitrim showdown

Eoin O’Neill is a major doubt for London’s Connacht Championship clash with Leitrim after suffering a knee injury during last weekend’s round of club championship games.

O’Neill was hurt after just 20 seconds of Tir Chonaill Gaels’ win over county champions Fulham Irish. The Galway native was cynically taken out by Fulham goalkeeper Declan Traynor as he tried to round him and net. O’Neill attempted to play on but was forced to withdraw on 12 minutes after competing for a high ball.

“We’re hoping it’s not as bad as it first looked,” said Exiles boss Paul Coggins. “It might be just a dead leg. He was in the pool with the team on Sunday night and he’ll have a couple more of those during the week.”

Coggins also has concerns over Greg Crowley, Danny Ryan (both hamstring) and John Scanlon (back). “Greg isn’t looking great while I’d say Danny is definitely out. Danny only came onto the panel recently, so it’s a shame for him. John took a knock to his back on Sunday but he should be okay. A lot of the lads are sore after the weekend. We’ll be looking to give them as must recovery time as possible this week.”

Coggins brought his players to the Crown Moran Hotel on Sunday night for a recovery session and to help refocus minds on Sunday’s visit of Leitrim. The scheduling of club championship games means all of the London panel are now eligible to play.

Coggins was in attendance at all four senior championship games and was impressed with the fare on show, in particular Tir Chonaill Gaels’ win over Fulham.

“Friday was probably the best club game in London that I’ve seen for many years,” he admitted, “It was really intense and played at a great pace, and it’s good for London that a number of county panelists were involved. A couple of players did their chances no harm either.”
