“We have to keep improving” insists George

Although it is still only January and the football year is very much in its infancy, the Leitrim footballers recorded their second win of the FBD League in Strokestown on Sunday last when they dismissed the challenge posed by GMIT. While a winning habit is something all teams, no matter what standard they are competing at aspire to, Leitrim manager George Dugdale insisted in the aftermath of last Sunday’s game that his side will have to continue improving if they are to make a real impression in the National League.

While he was naturally pleased to see his side record a victory, George was less than impressed with certain aspects of the Leitrim performance.
“It’s always nice to win but our performances will have to continue improving,” he stressed. “The first half today we were well off the pace, we improved somewhat in the second half.
“Winning is great and a winning mentality is what we are trying to build but we have a long way to go yet before Limerick, we have a lot of work to do in the next two weeks.”
Although they emerged victorious by seven points all present in Strokestown would have been all too aware that against tougher opposition Leitrim could well have been punished for the wastefulness in front of goal and that was something George insisted will have to improve.
“There was a lot of missed scores. It’s good that we’re creating the chances but we have to become more clinical, it’s something we’re going to have to work on in training. Our shot selection and our finishing left a lot to be desired.”
In recent weeks the Leitrim management have been stressing the importance of the team’s work ethic and that was something that George touched on after last Sunday’s win.
“I don’t know if it was evident in the first half but in the second half we got our work ethic and team ethic together. That’s part of our management philosophy, team ethic - hard work and improving all aspects of our play.”
