“We want to be unbeatable in Pairc Sean” says Barney
After last Sunday’s game against Limerick, Leitrim joint manager Barney Breen was as frustrated as the Leitrim supporters who exited Pairc Sean hoping to see their side get of to a winning start in the Allianz National Football League Division 4. While Barney was quick to point to areas of Leitrim’s performance that he was less than happy with, he was also adamant one defeat does not undo the good work that has been done since the beginning of January.
Limerick left Pairc Sean MacDiarmada no doubt happy to have got their campaign off to a winning start and were for a long time made to work hard for their victory with Barney stating Pairc Sean MacDiarmada must become a fortress if Leitrim are to have realistic hopes of promotion.
“We’re sick and tired of being told we’re hard beaten in Pairc Sean, we want to be unbeatable in Pairc Sean,” said Barney, adding, “They’ll go home this evening and say it took them a while to wear us down but we want to be unbeatable in Pairc Sean. I felt we didn’t impose ourselves on them as much as we should have in the second half to create that scenario.”
Looking back on how Leitrim played in the first half Barney acknowledged he and George Dugdale were relatively pleased and he thought with a few improvements victory was there for the taking in the second half. Ultimately that of course is not how the game transpired and speaking after the game Barney attempted to put his finger on where it went wrong in the second half.
“We had a great start, a great first five minutes, after that we had a lean period but by and large the first half we were happy. I felt be were by far the better team, there were a couple of balls dropped short and so on and we thought we were going to be able to work it out at half time. We were very much in the game, I thought it was just a matter of upping the pace a bit and we would eventually take them.
“In the second half, whatever happened there was a lot of elementary mistakes and they punished us. We weren’t stepping up into them, we were standing off them and they punished us in that middle period.”
