Slick Glenfarne/Kilty march on

A much slicker and better organised Glenfarne/ Kiltyclogher outfit easily disposed of the challenge of FenaghSt. Caillin's in Saturday evening's Leitrim intermediate championship quarter-final in Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada.

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher held the edge in the proceedings at all stages and took command with a 22nd minute Pdraig Sweeney goal. Fenagh St. Caillin’s staged a mini fight back early in the second half and managed to reduce Glenfarne/ Kilty’s lead to five points.

But the north Leitrim side then found an extra gear that allowed them to stretch their advantage to nine points at thefinish and during a prolonged period when the Fenagh men’s challenge ran more and more out of steam.

The north Leitrim men, who definitely lagged behind Dromahair and Drumkeerin in the pre-competition odds, now face an intriguing Semi-Final next Sunday against Cloone, with the winners making an all-too-rare appearance in the Intermediate Final.

Given the way that they have overcome their north Leitrim neighbours and now Fenagh so well, Glenfarne will carry no fear into the semi-final.

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher made a bright start and grabbed a three point’s lead in the opening nine minutes. In this spell J.J. McDermott shot Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher opening score at the end of a good solo run while Shane McLoughlin and Pdraig Sweeney added a point each.

St. Caillin’s had a let off when Fergal Clancy blazed an 11th minute goal chance off their crossbar. The Fenagh men eventually opened their account eight minutes later when Brendan Flynn converted a free.

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher responded almost immediately with a point from play, which Michael Maguire hit over. The turning point in the game came in the 22nd minute when Pdraig Sweeney fired to the Fenagh net after a Fergal Clancy pass.

Referee Vincent McMorrow issued the game’s first yellow card three minutes later to Sean McLoughlin, the Glenfarne/Kilty fullback. Paul Ellis reduced the gap slightly for Fenagh seconds later when he popped over a free.

But Glenfarne/ Kiltyclogher finished the half with a flourish when Pdraig Sweeney shot points from a free and play, which gave his side a comfortable 1-6 to 0-2 lead at the break.

St. Caillin’s had their best spell in the game in the opening six minutes of the second half when they reduced their opponent’s lead by two points and also held the north Leitrim side scoreless in that period.

In this spell, Brendan Flynn hit a well-taken point for the Fenagh men after receiving a pass from Paul Ellis while Ellis himself also found the target from play shortly afterwards.

When J.J. McDermott finished off a good Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher move with a 37th minute point he ended Fenagh/St. Caillin’s short lived come back even though Niall Flynn replied with a well-hit long range point for the Fenagh side almost immediately.

Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher increased their lead to seven points by the 44th minute after Pdraig Sweeney put over a free and Declan Sweeney shot over from play.

A possible penalty was not awarded to Glenfarne/ Kiltyclogher at the end of the third quarter when it appeared that Pdraig Sweeney was pushed to the ground in the small parallelogram by a Fenagh defender.

After this incident, Fenagh St. Caillin’s worked the ball up field quickly and Brendan Flynn shot point from play. However this proved to be the last flag that the Fenagh men would raise in the game as their challenge began to fizzle out.

Michael Maguire increased Glenfarne’s advantage with a well executed point from distance in the 51st minute. But Maguire then allowed Fenagh to have a let off a minute later when he drove a clear-cut goal chance wide with his miscued soccer style effort.

Sub Diarmuid Clancy increased Glenfarne/Kilty’s lead to nine points when he shot over from play in the 53rd and 54th minutes. Neither side managed to register a score in the final ten minutes of the action, which included four minutes that was added on for stoppages.

The loser’s woes were added to in this period when yellow cards were issued to fullback Pdraig Flynn and centre forward Paul Ellis.
