International football comes to border region

Dozens of primary school children from the West Cavan & South West Fermanagh areas are being given the opportunity to participate in a World Cup style tournament. The event will involve young people aged between 8 and 10 years old from both sides of the border.

The main aims of the tournament are to create an environment where local young people can practice and experience equality and explore how racism, sectarianism and other negative social issues can be tackled in practical ways.

The Fair Play World Cup was initiated by Community Connections Community Development Project (CDP) in 2006 and has continued annually since then. In 2011, 175 young people from West Cavan & South West Fermanagh along with their teachers and parents participated in the event.

This year’s event will be held on Friday, June 8 at The Cottage Meadow, Belcoo from 10am - 2pm and will be open to schools and youth clubs in West Fermanagh & West Cavan. Family, friends and the public are also welcome at the event. In the run up to the event each team/school/community has been allocated a nation they will represent in the day long tournament. Each school/club will then carry out a project about the nation which they will be representing and compile a portfolio which will be presented to the organising committee prior to the tournament. The project will include geography of the nation, population and culture and will also look at how young people’s lives are affected in each country by racism, sectarianism and other negative social issues.

The tournament will take place on a group stage format with a semi-final and final to close. As the programme will be held in the run up to the Euro 2012 tournament, this year’s programme will have a European theme.

The 2012 Programme and Peace Cup event is being organised by Breffni Integrated in partnership with Fermanagh Policing & Community Safety Partnership, FAI Development Coaches & Cavan Sports Partnership. It is planned that the event will provide an opportunity for organisations & services to engage with young people, their teachers & parents to help promote their services.
