Tradition sees Aughawillan across the line
Struggle they may have but the winning tradition that seems ingrained in all young Aughawillan footballers was evident for all to see last Saturday in Pairc Sheain Ui Eslin, Ballinamore as the Willies withstood ferocious pressure from 14-man Drumkeerin to win the Glenfarne Wood Products Leitrim Intermediate Championship title.
GWP INTERMEDIATE CHAMPIONSHIP
AUGHAWILLAN 1-8
DRUMKEERIN 0-10
Failing to score for the last 14 minutes of a championship final may seem like a recipe for disaster but Aughawillan managed to do just that and still stay one point ahead at the final whistle of a Drumkeerin team that had the chance to force at least a draw but lacked composure in front of the posts.
After suffering the heart-break of a one point loss against Cloone 12 months previously, Aughawillan savoured a very different feeling last Saturday as they fulfilled their driving ambition to return to the Senior ranks after two years in the Intermediate grade.
Under ferocious pressure in the closing ten minutes as Drumkeerin seemed to exert a vice-like grip on the ball and their shooting boots deserted them, Aughawillan reverted to what is programmed into their DNA – they fought for every ball as if their life depended on it.
