Press Association apologises to Drumshanbo senator

Senator Tom Sheahan’s comments about O Cuiv in the Seanad last week was a big story, but not as big as the story the Press Association put it out.

Following the debacle in the Seanad last Thursday, the Press Association who were present at proceedings sent out the wire to news avenues attributing Senator Sheahan’s comments to Drumshanbo Fianna Fail Senator Paschal Mooney.

“Fianna Fail Senator stabs leader in the back” was the headline that went out, SenatorMooney told the Leitrim Observer.

He said the incorrect story appeared online on the Irish Independent and in the Irish News and Metro editions. He said he was speaking to a journalist in the Irish Daily Mail when the mistake came out. The reporter asked about the comments he made and Senator Mooney was taken aback before he quickly clarified the situation.

Senator Mooney said the Press Association have apologised to him and are “deeply embarrassed” by the obvious mistake. He said some of the newspapers have also made corrections and apologised.

He said he did receive a few phone calls about the story, but the majority of his party colleagues already knew the correct version of events.
