Cian Wrynne’s ‘Golden Hour’ image topped 160 entries to win the adult category of Teagasc’s ‘This is Beef Farming’ competition

A Mohill photographer has won the adult category of the This is Beef Farming photo competition, organised by Teagasc and sponsored by FBD.

Cian Wrynne’s winning photograph, captioned Golden Hour, was selected from 160 entries received in the competition, which was held in the run-up to the Teagasc BEEF2026 Open Day at Grange.

Explaining the image, Mr Wrynne said the photograph represents “more than just a cow in a field.”

“It reflects generations of work, care, and pride in producing quality beef, while maintaining the landscapes that make rural Ireland so special.”

The competition featured an adult category and a junior category for entrants under 18 years of age. All photographs were displayed during the Teagasc BEEF2026 Open Day in Grange, where the winners were presented with their prizes by Maureen O’Meara of FBD.

The adult runner-up was Seán Brett, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, whose photograph was captioned: “My Hereford cow North, standing proudly beside her first-born calf Skye in the golden light of an evening sunset.”

Mr Brett said: “This is an exceptional pair and it is amazing to get views like this every day at the farm.”

The junior category was won by James Devins, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo. His winning photograph was captioned: “A quiet and powerful moment in nature, centred around a single cow standing calmly in an open field.”

Mr Devins said the image “combines simplicity with natural elegance, capturing not only an animal in its environment but also the quiet beauty and serenity of the countryside.”

The competition was sponsored by FBD. The overall winner in the adult category received €300 in FBD Hotel Vouchers, while the adult runner-up received €150 in FBD Hotel Vouchers. The overall winner in the junior (under-18) category received €100 in FBD Hotel Vouchers.

The winning photographs can be viewed on the Teagasc website.
