Ballinamore Courthouse to be redeveloped as cultural hub

Redevelopment of the historic Ballinamore Courthouse will go to planning this week
Ballinamore councillor Gary Prior has warmly welcomed the news that the planned redevelopment of the historic Ballinamore Courthouse will go to planning this week, describing it as a major milestone for the town and wider region.
Constructed around 1830, Ballinamore Courthouse is a protected structure and served as the district courthouse for approximately 175 years. The final sitting of the court took place on 24 July 2009, and the building has remained unused since. Over that period, the courthouse has suffered significant deterioration due to a lack of heating and ongoing roof leaks.
The vision for the courthouse is to transform the landmark building into a vibrant multi-functional cultural and community hub for Ballinamore, similar to successful regeneration projects delivered in towns such as Portumna.
With projected construction costs in the region of €6–7 million, the project represents a major investment in the cultural and economic regeneration of Ballinamore. The capital redevelopment project will be delivered by Leitrim County Council.
The redeveloped courthouse will provide a range of arts, cultural and community spaces. Plans also include a dedicated facility celebrating the life and work of renowned writer John McGahern, helping to strengthen Ballinamore’s cultural identity and tourism offering.
In addition, the project aims to improve surrounding streetscapes, creating a more welcoming and accessible town centre environment that encourages increased footfall and economic activity.
Cllr Prior also paid tribute to the broad partnership driving the project forward, acknowledging the commitment and support of Leitrim County Council, local elected representatives, the Ballinamore Town Team and Ballinamore Development Company.
Once planning approval is secured, the intention will be to seek national funding support through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).
Speaking on the development, Cllr Prior said: “This is a hugely positive development for Ballinamore and the wider area. The courthouse is an important part of the town’s heritage and this project has the potential to breathe new life into the building while creating a modern community and cultural facility for future generations. It also represents a significant opportunity for regeneration, tourism and economic growth in the town.”
