The Economic Development and tourism section of Leitrim County Council are open to participating in discussions regarding the potential development of a viewing bay at Lough Allen.
This comes as Cllr Brendan Barry again requested funding from Ballinamore Municipal District to create a viewing bay overlooking Lough Allen at Cormongan.
The Sinn Féin councillor put forward a proposal during a meeting of Ballinamore M.D. in July, suggesting that a viewing bay at Cormongan could become a prominent landmark in the county, attracting tourism.
“Surely, we should be able to provide at least one viewing bay on a vantage point overlooking Lough Allen in County Leitrim,” Cllr Barry said at December’s meeting.
“A local contractor is prepared to carry out works to further this project and Leitrim County Council should do everything it can to deliver a viewing bay."
A reply issued by the Economic Development explained that Leitrim County Council is always seeking to promote natural amenities in the county for both locals and tourists, and the Economic Development and tourism section would be happy to discuss the potential development of a project at an appropriate location.
These discussions would take place with the elected members or a community group.
If the initial discussions and any funding request from the Government are successful and lead to a project, proper procurement guidelines would need to be followed and the Council would need to encourage local contractors to bid for the work.
