Heads up! A new tennis court could be coming to Acres Lake Amenity, Drumshanbo

A new tennis court could be on the way for Acres Lakes Amenity, Drumshanbo, it was revealed at a recent meeting where Cllr Enda McGloin asked the council for funding to refurbish the tennis courts at the amenity.

He also asked that the Leitrim Sports Partnership work locally to seek to form a tennis club that would assist in promoting the game of tennis and ensuring the courts are maintained and kept properly.

A new €1.2 million Water Sports Facility at Acres Lake that will provide year-round hot showers, changing rooms, toilets, secure storage, induction spaces, and equipment washdown areas is soon to be completed at the amenity.

The official response said the council are reviewing all funding options for its recreational facilities across the county including the tennis courts and a costing has been completed on resurfacing the tennis court in readiness for a funding option.

It continued that the Leitrim Sports Partnership (LSP) will facilitate discussions with interested individuals or groups about forming a local tennis club.

Cllr McGloin recalled that there was a tennis club at the amenity previously and they had "tennis lessons going; a proper club with proper monitoring would cut out any activity other than people playing tennis or people abusing the nets and kicking balls into it etc. They need that level of governance and the activity in there needs to be monitored."

He welcomed the response from the council and said "it's great to see the possibility of funding to resurface the courts and put in new nets and get it all maintained."

Cllr Brendan Barry supported the motion and said it was worth putting out the word through the Sports Partnership to find "someone who is keen on tennis and would be interested in setting something up."

Cllr Gary Prior, who chaired the meeting, also supported the motion.
