Uisce Éireann have confirmed that a 2.85km section of watermain running from Fenagh to Ardrum will be prioritised for replacement in 2026.
This work will form part of their 2026 programme and is estimated to cost approximately €2.1 million, a figure which is subject to change as design work commences.
The news has been welcomed by local councillor Gary Prior, who has been highlighting the effects of continuous disruptions on residents in South Leitrim.
Cllr Prior noted that he had been speaking with a resident who uses the Coraleehan water supply, and that this resident has been without water for 22 days across 2025 alone due to power outages and bursts.

“That is crazy and a number of businesses have been telling me how they’ve been affected over the year as well,” Cllr Prior said. He added that the commitment to replacing almost 3km of the watermain is “very welcome,” as what is happening right now is “a massive disruption and needs investment.”
Leitrim councillors are set to meet with Uisce Éireann in Carrick-on-Shannon on September 8, and Cllr Prior said they have a number of questions prepared, including whether or not there will be investment in the water treatment plant in Carrick-on-Shannon. “This is a big question we need an answer to,” he said.
Water supply issues in South Leitrim, particularly around Ballinamore and the surrounding areas, have been disrupting day-to-day operations for many households and businesses. Uisce Éireann have been carrying out repairs, but with the problem reoccurring without proper replacement, the situation remains unresolved.
“This is something that’s been causing widespread disruption the past few months, especially throughout this year. All they’ve been doing is repairing and going but it wasn’t working. The supply at the reservoir has been on a knife edge,” explained Cllr Prior.

He added that pressure will be kept on Uisce Éireann at Council level to ensure work commences as soon as possible on the 2.85km of watermain earmarked for replacement.
“It’ll take some time for procurement, design and logistics to be figured out. We will be pressing for a commitment from Uisce Éireann at the meeting that they will commence this as soon as possible,” concluded Cllr Prior.
