A beekeeping group, Digges Beekeeper’s Association, based in Mohill, has announced details of an upcoming pre-course information day and a beginners beekeeping course for those interested in taking up beekeeping.

The pre-course information day will take place on Saturday, February 21, with a meet-up scheduled for 11am at the Ballinamore Education Centre (N41 EW90).

Mary Hyland, a beekeeper with Digges Beekeeper’s Association, noted that the association has been running the course for many years and outlined what participants can expect. “People will be learning the basics of beekeeping and what they need to get to start off beekeeping at the most basic level,” she said of the pre-course.

Following this, the association will begin a beginners course on Tuesday, February 24, at 7:30pm in the Teagasc Centre Mohill. “We’ll be taking them along to our apiary and we’ll be giving them practical sessions so they can learn at the hives as well,” she said.

The course usually runs for 10 weeks, and Mary explained that there will be significantly more practical sessions at the hive during the summertime, starting in March and continuing through to the summer months, so the bees can be put to bed for the winter come September.

Those who sign up will join Digges Beekeeper’s Association as they start the course. Mary also emphasised the importance of beekeeping native bees. “We are a native Irish honey bee association in that we prefer that our beekeepers keep native bees,” she said, adding that their work does not affect the honey bee population.

Members are also asked to join the Native Irish Honey Bee Society (NIHBS), which promotes the conservation, study, improvement and re-introduction of Irish honey bees.
