Boyle native, Dr Patricia McGowan has been honoured for her work by the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR).

Each year the EACR honours two outstanding young scientists at the Irish Association for Cancer Research Conference (IACR) based on the quality of their excellent work submitted to the IACR meeting and the academic merit of the work.

The Award marks a huge achievement for Patricia. It follows the award of an Irish Cancer Society Research Fellowship in December 2011.

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer following the presentation of the award, Patricia said “I’m really delighted to have been honoured in this way. It shows that the cancer research being done in Ireland, which is funded by the Irish Cancer Society is of a high international standard, and it’s great to be associated with that.”

The Boyle native has also gained invaluable experience working in her chosen field in Ontario, Canada, and, since her return to Ireland in 2010, has been investigating novel targeted therapies for triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Her work on this project is funded by the Irish Cancer Society and such investment would not be possible without the extensive volunteer-led fundraising activities.

Such an event is taking place in Patricia’s home town of Boyle on October 6 next. Organised by Damian Regan, the Run, Walk and Roll for Cancer Research - 5.5km is open to runners, joggers and walkers alike.
