Work to begin on removing 24 poplar trees
Several poplar trees are to be removed in Carrick-on-Shannon this week, it was revealed at the latest Municipal District meeting by district engineer, Darragh O'Boyle.
Mr O'Boyle, addressing the members, said between the roundabout at Tesco and the roundabout at Shannon Lodge, trees on the left-hand side of the road will be removed in the interest of safety.
“We carried out two reports from qualified arboriculturists to see what state the trees are in and funding has been secured from the TII,” he said
Twenty four of the trees are to be removed and the remaining trees will have protruding branches removed.
“It's been confirmed by the report that these trees are a hazard to the vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists and it's a busy thoroughfare for them,” he said.
The work will start this week and continue for three weeks.
He said there will be disruption to the N4. One way traffic will be allowed on the road heading towards Sligo, when works are ongoing and the Dublin traffic will be diverted.
Mr O'Boyle who admitted this was an issue on social media, said he will liaise with Carrick-on-Shannon Tidy Towns in relation to the project.
