Funding for a new library in Carrick-on-Shannon is a high priority for Leitrim County Council, the Municipal District has heard.
Cllr Maeve Reynolds asked that Leitrim County Council prioritise funding for a new library in Carrick-on-Shannon.
“As the county town, it requires an accessible, multi-purpose educational and social space for the community, with adequate room for books and resources,” Cllr Reynolds said.
She also noted that the library should have sufficient space to support workshops, talks, events and study as well as suitable parking for those with limited mobility.
“I’d like to pay credit to the library and all that goes on, they have wonderful workshops and events, it’s not just a space for books anymore.
“Where it’s currently located on Bridge Street is good in that it’s visible but it’s not good for parking and anyone with mobility issues. It’s also not big enough to serve the population of the town for all the good work that they do,” Cllr Reynolds added.
A reply from the Director of Services, Housing and Community, Corporate Services, Cultural and Emergency Services explained that the five year Leitrim Library Development Plan 2023 - 2027 emphasises the vital role libraries play in the county's towns and villages, especially in Carrick-on-Shannon.
A key objective of the Council is to develop a new, multi-purpose library facility in Carrick-on-Shannon, with efforts focused on getting capital funding to create a vibrant and accessible space.
Cllr Reynolds welcomed the response and recognised that Leitrim County Council has identified it as a priority.
Cllr Guckian and Cllr McGowan seconded the motion.
“Funding for the library is not adequate at the moment. They’re being starved of resources and funding.
Cllr Reynolds also pointed out that the library's door opening onto the busy street presents a risk for those with young children. She requested the installation of a second, wheelchair-accessible door for better safety and accessibility.
