Dromod will see traffic calming measures to slow speeding vehicles through the town, Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard.
Cllr Sean McGowan asked District Engineer Darragh O’Boyle to seek funding in the 2025 road works programme to provide four table tops in Dromod, one at either end on entering the village, one at the pedestrian crossing at Cox’s and one located near the old Garda Barracks.
“The speed of traffic going through the village has no regard for older people walking and people with buggies.
“Table tops are proven to slow traffic down so I ask that this be a priority to be included in the road works programme next year,” Cllr McGowan said.
Tabletops are an effective solution for slowing down traffic in an area while still allowing for smooth flow, and they are less disruptive than traditional speed bumps.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Reynolds, Cllr Guckian and Cllr Flynn.
“The biggest issue that came up when I was canvassing in Dromod was the speed of the traffic through the village and how it’s gotten significantly worse,” added Cllr Reynolds.
“There’s definitely a huge problem there in terms of speed. It’s an urgent matter,” said Cllr Guckian.
Darragh O’Boyle explained that there is no Restoration Improvement Grant funding for Dromod, but there should be access to the Old N4 Grant which could provide funding for a table top.
“The likelihood is we’ll probably put in one table top junction, not four,” Mr O’Boyle said.
Mr O’Boyle also highlighted that the speeds on the national roads will soon be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h.
In response, the Roads Department explained that the district office lacks discretionary funds for tabletop junctions; however, they are optimistic that funding from the Old N4 grant system can be allocated for the reconstruction of the carriageway through Dromod in the coming years.
