Carrick-on-Shannon Post Office, St George's Terrace
In November, An Post confirmed that their post office in Carrick-on-Shannon would be relocated to Glancy’s Supervalu in Cortober early next year, following the postmaster retiring from the role.
The decision has sparked concern among politicians, locals and business people in Carrick-on-Shannon, with the post office set to move away from the town centre and cross the border into County Roscommon.
At December’s meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Paddy Farrell proposed that councillors should seek to reverse the decision made by An Post to close the office in the town.
Cllr Farrell said he has been inundated with phone calls about the matter, and claimed it is a disgrace that there will be no post office in the county town.
“It’s not fair on a lot of elderly people and it’s not fair on local businesses, it will affect their business as well,” he said.
“We have four newly elected TDs and I think we should at least write to them and see if this decision can be reversed,” he added.
“The population has grown to enough of a threshold that the post office should issue two licenses for Carrick-on-Shannon, one for the Leitrim side and one for the Roscommon side,” Cllr Cormac Flynn said.
“It’s not adequate that the county town will be without a post office in the town centre, and it’s disgraceful that this decision has been made and is going ahead without adequate consultation,” Cllr Maeve Reynolds added.
Cllr Stenson agreed that An Post should have conducted more thorough consultations.
Cllr Sean McGowan described the move as a ‘backwards’ step from An Post.
“You have to feel for the older people who have to try get across, a lot of people used to walk to St George’s Terrace and avail of the facilities,” he commented.
All elected members of Carrick-on-Shannon M.D. supported the motion, bar Cllr Des Guckian who partially supported it but believed it was too late to take effective action.
He asked people “not to support An Post in the future if they don’t play ball with this.”
After discussion, it was agreed to contact the four recently elected TDs in the constituency in an effort to reverse the decision.
