Calls have been made for a Local Link service connecting Carrick-on-Shannon town to the newly relocated post office in Cortober.

Cllr Cormac Flynn proposed a motion requesting Leitrim County Council to liaise with Local Link providers to establish a bus service in and around Carrick-on-Shannon to the new post office.

The post office officially moved on February 4 from St George’s Terrace to Glancy’s Supervalu, situated on the county border, following the retirement of the postmaster.

This relocation means that the Carrick-on-Shannon post office is now in County Roscommon.

The decision sparked anger among many residents, politicians and business owners, who opposed moving the post office from its historic location and far from the town centre.

At a December meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon municipal district, Cllr Paddy Farrell proposed that councillors should seek to reverse the decision. It was agreed to contact the four Sligo-Leitrim TDs in an effort to overturn it, but despite this, the post office opened in Cortober earlier this month.

Cllr Flynn suggested the Local Link service could operate on the busiest day for people collecting payments from the post office.

“It’s over two kilometres out of town, there’s a lot of people who may not have access to cars due to a disability or to age and maybe the local link could provide two dedicated runs out to the post office,” said Cllr Flynn.

Mary Quinn, Director of Services for Housing, Corporate Services, Community and Cultural Services stated that the Council can contact Local Link through the community department to explore the possibility of providing such a service.

The motion was seconded by Cllr Sean McGowan, who noted that the service would likely only need to operate one or two days a week.
