A joint initiative aimed at improving home fire safety for older adults across the county was welcomed by Cathaoirleach, Cllr Paddy Farrell this week. The Local Protocol Of Cooperation was signed by Leitrim Chief Executive Joseph Gilhooly and Age Friendly Ireland National Programme Manager Eimear McCormack last week.

The initiative called the Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme aims to support older people to live in their own home with dignity and independence, for as long as possible.

The initiative will see firefighters visit the homes of older residents who are referred through the Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme. Two uniformed firefighters from the local brigade will be attended by a friend, neighbour, or support person to ensure the comfort of the resident.

Firefighters will give guidance on fire escape planning, installation and testing of smoke alarms and will also identify potential fire hazards and offer practical advice and promote awareness of night time fire safety routines.

Cllr Farrell welcomed the "important and progressive step in enhancing the safety, dignity and quality of life for older people in Leitrim and it brings the expertise and dedication of Leitrim's Fire Service and the Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme in a partnership built on trust, care and community spirit."

He said the initiative will ensure that "older residents receive the support and peace of mind they deserve" and "can lead to lasting, positive change."

He thanked Mr Gilhooly and Ms McCormack for their "leadership and vision, and to all those whose worked behind the scenes that have brought this initiative to life. Our deepest appreciation also goes to the firefighters who will be delivering this service with care and professionalism."

He added: "Together, we are taking a step forward - not only in fire safety, but in ensuring that every older person in Leitrim knows they are valued, protected and supported. Let this initiative be a reminder that when we work together, we can build a county that truly serves the needs of all it's people."
