A decision is expected soon on a planning application seeking to replace a commercial building with a mixed residential development.

The planning application was submitted to Leitrim County Council on July 9, requesting permission to demolish an existing commercial building at Townparks, Carrick-on-Shannon, and to construct a total of 32 homes.

The proposed construction of the 32 residential units consists of eight semi-detached houses, each with three bedrooms and two floors; six terraced houses, each with three bedrooms and two floors; four terraced houses, each with two bedrooms and two floors; and two apartment blocks, each with two floors, comprising a total of 14 one-bedroom apartments.

The application also includes plans for a new site entrance, as well as additional works including car parking, landscaping, connections to utilities such as water and sewage, and all other related works necessary for the development.

Leitrim County Council is expected to make a decision on the application by September 2.

A report released by GeoDirectory today, August 26, shows that figures from Q2 of this year indicate that Leitrim is lagging significantly behind Longford in terms of construction activity.

Both counties recorded fewer than 150 buildings under construction in total, while construction activity increased nationally, rising by 9.2 percent in June compared to June 2024.
