Sligo Rape Crisis Centre (SRCC) has opened an outreach clinic in Carrick-on-Shannon, which was officially launched on Monday, September 8, by Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan.
The centre, called the DMC Rooms, is named in memory of the late CEO, David Madden. This new outreach location will provide counselling for survivors of sexual violence in Leitrim, as well as for their supporters.
SRCC CEO Danielle Neely said the demand for services continues to grow, with increased public awareness encouraging more people affected by sexual trauma to seek support.
“Increased public awareness has empowered more survivors to come forward, many seeking to process and heal from historic trauma. In 2024 alone, we delivered 1,865 counselling sessions,” said Ms Neely.
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan highlighted the shift in societal attitudes regarding sexual violence.

“Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence is an area that is extremely important to me and to the Government as a whole,” said Minister O’Callaghan.
“Not just in Ireland, but internationally years ago, this type of reprehensible behaviour was brushed under the carpet and in many respects, the criminal justice system and policymakers tolerated it.
“That does not happen anymore. And it's very strong and important that we send out a message, that such type of behaviour is unacceptable and will result in a criminal prosecution and conviction,” he concluded.
Sligo Rape Crisis Centre provides a safe, free, and confidential space for survivors of child sexual abuse, rape, and sexual assault in Sligo, Leitrim, and West Cavan.
It offers support and counselling for both adults and young people in a secure environment.

Its mission is to create a safe place for those who have experienced sexual violence, whether recently or in the past, and to provide advocacy when needed.
SRCC also delivers awareness and training to agencies working with survivors and is committed to challenging the tolerance and existence of sexual violence. Outreach initiatives include consent workshops for secondary school students.
SRCC can be contacted via freephone at 1800 750 780 or by email at info@srcc.ie
