A Leitrim group water scheme has been honoured at the 2025 Group Water Scheme Excellence Awards held last Thursday at The Clayton Hotel, Galway as part of Rural Water Week. The event, hosted by the National Federation of Group Water Schemes (NFGWS) in association with the Local Authority Services National Training Group celebrates the outstanding achievements of Ireland’s rural water sector. The winners were announced by the Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD.
Among the national winners were Sliabh An Iarainn Group Water Scheme located in Aughnasheelin, recognising their work within the local community. An addition to this year’s programme, the newly launched GWS Ethos and Volunteerism Special Recognition Award was bestowed for the extraordinary efforts of volunteers and staff, particularly in response to the widespread disruption caused by Storm Eowyn earlier this year. This special award celebrates the values that underpin the group water scheme movement: service, solidarity, and sustainability.
