The construction of a brand new respite home for families of adult children with intellectual disabilities in Leitrim is set to begin within the next three to four weeks.
The home will be located in Autumn View, Carrick-on-Shannon, on HSE-owned grounds, spanning over 4,000 square feet.
The €1.1 million project will feature five en-suite bedrooms, multiple living rooms, and a total floor area of 383 square metres.
Updates have also been announced on the construction of a residential unit in Fenagh for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Renovation works began in August on a four-bedroom, 337 square metre residential care home, with completion expected by Spring 2026.

Together, these projects represent an investment of almost €2 million in essential facilities for people with disabilities in Leitrim.
The respite home and residential care home have been long sought by parents of adults with intellectual disabilities, who have been advocating for such services in the county for the past three years. This is a significant milestone for the county and for these families, as Leitrim and Monaghan are currently the only two counties in Ireland without full-time residential care.
Gary Prior, Fianna Fáil councillor for the Ballinamore Electoral Area, who worked closely with parents advocating for these services, described the update as “really welcome news.”
He added that it is of huge importance to the families who have pursued this over the last number of years.
“I want to pay tribute to the families who have campaigned tirelessly over the years to help make this possible. Your dedication has been key to driving this progress,” said Cllr Prior.
