Uisce Éireann have confirmed that a major water network upgrade is set to get underway in Carrick-on-Shannon next week.

As part of the national Leakage Reduction Programme, Uisce Éireann will replace almost 1km of ageing water mains from Castlecara Road to Summerhill along the L3412, as well as from the N4 Attifinlay roundabout to the Castlecara Road roundabout.

The works aim to reduce bursts, improve water quality, and strengthen the resilience of the water network for local homes and businesses.

The project also involves laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting them to customers’ water supplies.

Farrans Construction will deliver these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with the project expected to be completed this summer.

To safely facilitate the water network upgrades, traffic lights will be in place, along with nighttime works on the N4. Customers will be given a minimum of 48-hours’ notice of any planned supply interruptions.

Uisce Éireann have said their long-term goal is to reduce leakage to 20 percent and that they have invested over €1 billion up to the end of 2029 in the network, including leakage reduction measures.

Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said, “These essential upgrades will bring lasting benefits to customers by reducing leakage, improving water quality, and strengthening resilience for the future. We appreciate the community’s cooperation as we deliver these important works over the coming months.”
