A lack of available accommodation for long term rentals is have a huge impact on tenant's abilities to secure housing through the HAP Scheme, Cllr Seadhna Logan has said.
Speaking at the recent municipal meeting, Cllr Logan warned that the “long term rental sector” in the county town is drying up.
“Airbnb and short term rentals are having a huge impact on the availability of accommodation in Carrick-on-Shannon,” he said adding that he had been on daft.ie and checked the price of rentals in Carrick-on-Shannon, Dromod and surrounding areas finding that, almost without exception, these properties were be well outside of the price range a HAP Scheme participant could afford.
He asked if the Council has a long-term strategy to “deal with these challenges going forward."
In response he was told that the Council continues to work with social housing applicants on the waiting list to secure accommodation through the private housing market under the RAS, Leasing and HAP schemes.
Under HAP legislation, limits for HAP payments are based on the number of the people in a household and the rental market in the locality.
