The proposed extension would run from the current end of the footpath on Hartley Road to the L-7401, following concerns over increasing traffic and pedestrian safety.

The prospect of extending a footpath along what was described as one of the most dangerous roads in Carrick-on-Shannon is to be investigated.

At the October meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Paddy Farrell called on the District Engineer to urgently extend the footpath on the Hartley Road (L-34002), from where it currently ends on the right-hand side as far as the L-7401, on grounds of safety.

Cllr Farrell described it as “one of the most dangerous roads” around Carrick, saying many people walk along the road and have requested that the footpath be extended.

“A lot of traffic from Boyle and Cootehall are coming down that direction to avoid the bridge and traffic out the Boyle road. It has become extremely dangerous,” said Cllr Farrell.

District Engineer Emma Donohoe acknowledged that it is a very busy road and said the proposal could be considered by the Active Travel department. She also expressed hope that the National Transport Authority would “positively respond.”

Cllr Farrell’s motion received unanimous support from councillors at the meeting.

An official response from the Roads department noted: “Leitrim County Council Active Travel department can investigate this scheme as part of their multi annual programme of works.”
