Site needed before funding can be secured for new Leitrim library

Funding for a new Carrick-on-Shannon library remains out of reach until a site is identified, with Leitrim County Council prioritising the project in its 2027 work programme.
The lack of an identified site for a new library in Carrick-on-Shannon has prevented funding from being secured, with site identification listed as a “priority” for Leitrim County Council in 2027.
An update on progress towards developing a new library in the town was sought by Cllr Maeve Reynolds at October’s meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District.
In her motion, she noted that the matter was raised at a meeting in 2024 and has since been included in the Council’s Capital Investment Programme and the Carrick-on-Shannon Joint Local Area Plan.
She sought clarification on progress, including site identification, funding, design and planning, as well as the anticipated timeframe for delivery.
Cllr Reynolds commented that Carrick-on-Shannon is “lucky” to have a library in the centre of the town, but said it cannot adequately serve the size of the community, particularly in terms of community functions.
Director of Services Mary Quinn confirmed that an application for funding was submitted under the most recent Library Capital Development Programme. However, as a site had not been fully identified, the application was not shortlisted.
She noted that a potential site had been identified some time ago, but progress had been limited due to other priorities. However, the project is a priority in the 2027 work programme.
“Progression of this project (including site identification) will form part of the work programme for 2027,” an official response stated.
“The library, where it is, is brilliant that it’s in the town but it’s a nightmare to bring young children into, if you open the door you’re onto a busy street of traffic. From an accessibility point of view, it’s not that accessible for parking,” added Cllr Reynolds, urging that the project be made a priority.
Cllr Sean McGowan noted that all councillors at the meeting supported Cllr Reynolds’ motion.
