Leitrim and Sligo communities are mourning the loss of an “amazing chef” following the sudden passing of Maretta Rooney on Wednesday, September 24.

Maretta, of Glenaniff, Rossinver, and a retired staff member of Cloonamahon HSE in Sligo, will be deeply missed by her partner Liam McBride, brother Johnny, sister Ann, sister-in-law Molly, nieces Sharon and Mairead, nephews Padraig, Sean and David, as well as her extended family, neighbours, and many friends.

Tributes have been shared on RIP.ie, recalling Maretta’s warmth and her years as a chef in Cloonamahon.

“Such sad news today of the passing of a beautiful lady, Maretta RIP. We had great times in Cloonamahon Kitchen. We were a big happy family,” one condolence read.

Ms Rooney reposed at Our Lady’s Hospital Chapel in Manorhamilton on Friday, September 26, with removal to St Aidan’s Church, Ballaghmeehan. 

Her funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, September 27, at 11am, followed by burial in Mullies Cemetery.

“We are so sad to hear about Maretta’s passing, such an amazing lady, we feel lucky to have known her and will always remember her as an amazing chef who had the ability to produce exceptional cuisine with no complaints. Her kindness and friendship will always be remembered,” another tribute read.

Many condolences have highlighted her kind and caring nature.

“So sad to hear of Moretta’s sudden passing. I had the honour of working with Moretta in Cloonamahon for a good few years. What a great person and great friend. Will miss Moretta very much,” another person wrote.
