An outpouring of condolences has followed the passing of a Leitrim man remembered for his “giant heart and beautiful soul.”
Peter (Pee) McHugh of Annaghbrennan, Cloone, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home in his 92nd year.
Pee is predeceased by his loving wife, Breda; his parents, Michael and Ellen McHugh; his brother, Sean; and his sisters, Lizzie (Quinn), Maggie (Cunningham) and Moira (Tiernan).
He will be deeply missed by his loving and heartbroken children: Angela Cunningham, Michael, Deirdre McNulty, Derek, Enda and Helen Nic Aodha; along with his twenty-three adored grandchildren: Peter, Maria, Michael, Isobel, Frank, Adrienne, Edwina, Mark, Heidi, Robyn, Sonny, Cian, Noah, Ultán, Mischa, Muireann, Turlough, Síomha, Kody, Lily, Bríd, Sadhbh and Eorann.
Tributes have been pouring in on RIP.ie, where many have been reminiscing on Pee’s character. “He was a lovely man who faced the challenges in his life with courage and dignity. May his gentle soul rest in peace after a long life, well lived as father, friend and good neighbour,” one condolence read.
Pee will be fondly remembered by his beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, to whom he remained so close; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; his many relatives, neighbours and wide circle of friends; and his wonderful carers who looked after him so well at home.
In 2020, Pee and his close friend Andy McGovern were chosen as Joint Leitrim Guardian People of the Year. The Leitrim Guardian committee also paid tribute to him following his passing. “The Chairman, Secretary, officers and committee members of The Leitrim Guardian magazine offer sincere sympathy to the family of Peter McHugh on his passing. We are very proud that his name is included in our Leitrim People of the Year Awards. May his soul rest in peace,” the message read.
Remembered as a knowledgeable man, another condolence highlighted his love of the land and of learning, “His ability to relate to young and old made him popular to meet and a pleasant companion. There are many memories of this unique and special man that we can share but today it is a sadness at his passing. May he rest in peace.”
