An outpouring of tributes and fond memories has followed the passing of a Leitrim woman remembered as being ‘so welcoming and kind.’
Susan McHugh (née Fee) of Brockagh, Glenfarne passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, in the loving care of the staff at North West Hospice.
She was predeceased by her parents, Terence and Bridget; her sisters, Bella and Stella; and her brother, Peter.
She is deeply mourned by her loving husband Ben; daughter Oonagh; granddaughter Tara; son-in-law Barry; sisters Anna, Myra, Dympna (Sr. Bernadette) and Margaret; brother Patsy; as well as her nephews, nieces, relatives and wide circle of friends.
Many who knew Susan have shared their condolences and memories on RIP.ie. Alongside her husband Ben, she was a well-known and much-loved presence in Glenfarne, where they owned McHugh’s Pub in the village.

“She was a lovely lady whose loss will be profoundly felt by all fortunate enough to have enjoyed her hospitality in Glenfarne,” one person wrote.
“We enjoyed so many conversations with Susan whenever we visited McHugh’s, she always had a smile on her face, she was such a kind and lovely person,” another said.
“Susan was always so welcoming and kind, with a smile on her face, and it was an honour and pleasure to have known her,” another tribute read.
Glenfarne CCÉ also paid tribute to her hospitality: “We will remember Susie with love for her warm welcome and the kindness shown to all Glenfarne CCÉ musicians during our many wonderful trad sessions in Mc Hughs. Heaven has gained a most precious angel.”
Her funeral Mass took place on Saturday, February 21, at St Mary’s Church in Glenfarne, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

“She was such a warm, friendly, gentle person with her beautiful, big, welcoming smile. Will always remember you Susie,” another person shared on RIP.ie.
“Susan has always shown such genuine care and empathy to everyone who walks through your doors. Your pub is more than just a place. It’s a home away from home for so many, because of the warmth and kindness she brought to it every day. That same kindness is a reflection of the love and strength within her,” another tribute recalled.
