A Leitrim community is remembering a woman described as “a lovely lady who would always take time to say hello.”
Bernadette (Bernie) O’Dowd (née McWeeney), of Meera, Boyle Road, Carrick-on-Shannon, Roscommon/Leitrim, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 21st at Sligo University Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Anne Marie and Hugh, her sister Marie, and her brothers Josie and Hugh. Bernie will be deeply regretted and sadly missed by her heartbroken family, including her devoted husband Vincent, daughter Deirdre, sons Joseph and Conor, son-in-law David O’Connor, Joseph’s partner Marianna, Conor’s partner Priya, adored granddaughter Rebecca, brothers John and Paul, sister Margaret O’Reilly, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Tributes shared online have highlighted many fond memories of Bernie, including her time teaching at Carrick Vocational School. “I met her first when I taught in Carrick VS many years ago. I will never forget how kind and friendly she was to me and other newbies at the time. She was very sociable, great fun and a very smart lady,” one person wrote.

Another said: “I have very fond memories of her from my childhood and will always appreciate the help she gave me with maths for my Leaving Cert. It was always a pleasure to meet her again in recent years.”
“Have the fondest memories of living next door - she was always a kind source of good advice, looking out for and after all the neighbours,” another tribute read.
Mass of Christian Burial for Bernie took place on Friday, February 27, followed by cremation at Lakelands Crematorium in Cavan.
“She was such a lovely person. Elegant and stylish she loved her fashion and no outfit was complete without matching shoes. She was also a patient, kind and helpful teacher,” another tribute said.

“I always enjoyed meeting her on many visits to our shop and her beautiful smile,” another message read.
