Remains of Liam Farrell to be laid to rest again in Bornacoola

The remains of Liam Farrell will be reburied tomorrow morning after being exhumed earlier this month as part of a renewed investigation into the Leitrim man’s suspicious death.

Mr Farrell, 87, was found dead outside his house in Rooskey in January 2020. His remains were exhumed from Cloonmorris Cemetery on April 10 as part of a fresh Garda investigation ordered by the Minister for Justice. Chief State Pathologist Professor Linda Mulligan carried out a new post-mortem examination.

Even after six years in the ground, forensic experts can still examine bones for signs of fractures, head injuries, blunt force trauma or other evidence that may indicate foul play. Advances in forensic science can also help reassess the original cause of death.

The Farrell family had campaigned for years for the case to be reopened, insisting serious questions remained unanswered.

According to a notice on RIP.ie, Mr Farrell will now be reinterred in Cloonmorris Cemetery at 10am on April 23.

Members of the public have been invited to attend and form a guard of honour for what has been described as Liam Farrell’s final journey.
