A driver was detected travelling at 182km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 in Leitrim as Gardaí arrested 88 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence and detected more than 2,500 speeding offences during the August Bank Holiday roads policing operation.

A vehicle travelling at 182km/h on the N4 in Co Leitrim was among the highest speeds detected during the August Bank Holiday roads policing operation as Gardaí renewed their appeal for motorists to slow down and avoid the four main lifesaver offences.

A Garda Roads Policing Operation is continuing throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend, running from Thursday, July 30, until Tuesday, August 4.

During the first three days of the operation, Gardaí said there were no fatalities resulting from traffic collisions on Irish roads. The total number of road fatalities this year stands at 108.

Among the notable speeds detected on Saturday, August 1, was a vehicle travelling at 182km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 at Moher, Aughamore, Co Leitrim.

Other speeds detected included 101km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Dublin Road in Galway, 96km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Navan Road in Dublin 15, and 113km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N2 at Drumcaw, Co Monaghan.

Throughout the operation, Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing and regular high-visibility policing checkpoints.

To date, 88 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant, including alcohol and drugs.

Gardaí also said just over 2,540 drivers were detected speeding during the first three days of the operation, while more than 270 drivers were detected either using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

The bank holiday road safety enforcement operation is focusing on what Gardaí describe as the four lifesaver offences:

Speeding

Driving under the influence of an intoxicant

Using a mobile phone while driving

Not wearing a seatbelt

In a statement, Gardaí urged motorists to make road safety a priority by slowing down, obeying speed limits, never driving under the influence of drink or drugs, wearing seatbelts and avoiding the use of mobile phones while driving. They also reminded road users that their actions can help ensure everyone gets home safely over the bank holiday weekend.
