The absence of electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the new car park at Acres Lake, Drumshanbo, raises concerns, especially in light of Ireland's push for sustainable transportation, according to Adam Ó Ceallaigh, Green Party Representative for the Ballinamore Municipal District.
"The oversight in not incorporating EV charging points in the Acres Lake car park is seen as a missed opportunity to align with these national goals and support local EV owners. The community now stands at a pivotal juncture to rectify this and embrace a sustainable future," he said.
"Ireland, through Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland, has set a target under the Climate Action Plan 2023 to switch 30% of private car fleets to electric by 2030.
"The recent installation of a 150kW charger in Carrick-on-Shannon and an existing 120kW charger in Manorhamilton allows drivers to charge up within a matter of minutes, marking a significant step towards the accessibility of sustainable energy solutions for local residents as well as those traveling to and through Leitrim," he added.
Adam Ó Ceallaigh emphasises the importance of addressing this infrastructure gap.
"The exclusion of EV charging points was an oversight in the construction of the Acres Lake car park. The installation of EV chargers would be a vital improvement in our local infrastructure. It's a forward-thinking move that not only supports our commitment to sustainable transportation but also enhances the appeal of our community for both residents and visitors."
As of the end of August 2023, there are over 93,000 electric vehicles on the road in Ireland.
In 2024, the EV market will offer a plethora of over 70 battery-electric vehicle models, providing diverse options for environmentally and economically conscious consumers.
With EV options multiplying, it becomes increasingly important for infrastructure, like the Acres Lake car park, to keep pace with the evolving landscape of sustainable transportation.
For those looking at making the switch to an electric vehicle, the Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI) offers grants for battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) meeting specific standards.
Since July 1, 2023, individuals purchasing BEVs can avail themselves of grants of up to €3,500.
