A charity concert in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and North West Hospice will take place on Friday, March 7 at 8pm in The Mayflower, Drumshanbo.

The popular annual event titled ‘Beo le Ceol’ (Alive with Music), will feature an evening of traditional Irish music, song, and dance performed by the students of the Drumshanbo Traditional Irish Music Course under the guidance of their tutor, Mossie Martin.

The concert will showcase music from the northwest region, including songs from Kilmactranny, Turlough O’Carolan and the renowned McNulty family.

Established in 1997, the Drumshanbo Traditional Irish Music course builds on the success of the Joe Mooney Summer School and is one of the only courses of its kind in Ireland.

It attracts students from across the country and internationally, including the US, the UK, France and Australia.

The course provides a comprehensive introduction to Irish music, song, and dance for adults of all ages, instruments and abilities - even complete beginners.

Students play music daily and upon completing the modules, receive a Level 5 QQI Music Award.

Administered by the Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB), the course is now part of the newly reformed Leitrim College of Further Education and Training.

It offers additional QQI certified programmes in Business Administration, Tourism and Ecotourism, Food Science, Equine Studies and more.

All courses are free of charge, with funding available through the Back to Education Scheme or the SUSI grant.

The concert will raise vital funds for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland - the country’s leading dementia-specific organisation, offering support, advocacy and services for people affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Funds will also go towards North West Hospice who provide specialist palliative care for people with life-limiting illnesses in Leitrim, Sligo, South Donegal and West Cavan, through inpatient and community-based care.

The tickets for the charity concert at The Mayflower are available online at Eventbrite for €10. Children under 12 attend for free.

Donations can also be made through iDonate which will go directly to the chosen charities.
