After another 'near miss' was reported on the road in recent weeks, a
Leitrim councillor has asked when when safety works and signage will be carried out along the Ballinamore Road into Drumshanbo L3306, Creenagh to Carrickbaun.
The official response stated the the council can include the L-3306 in their low cost safety submission to the department. If successful, we can access funding to carry out appropriate signage along the public road.
Cllr Enda McGloin replied: "When I raised it before there was an accident that could have resulted in the loss of life and I got some commitment that it would be looked at in terms of speed warning signs and various other measures to reduce speed to encourage drivers unfamiliar with that section of the road to slow down. There is a mixture of pedestrians and motorists and it's a built up area. I'm disappointed that nothing has been done."
He said that rather than wait for the department to supply funding, "Leitrim County Council need to do something very urgently here" and said that a sign needs to be erected "to warn drivers, particularly from the Ballinamore side, that this area is built up and people need to slow down."
Cllr Brendan Barry supported the motion saying there are seven houses on both sides of the road and "vehicles are moving quite fast in that area. There was a car hit a number of years ago where it was parked along the verge; a vehicle was meeting another car and ploughed into it; it is a dangerous enough spot."
Cllr McGloin noted that there was a "downward incline on the hill so if you are coming from Ballinamore, you tend to gather speed; it's a speed trap and I would be anxious that Leitrim County Council would do something in the meantime. I'm hoping for some commitment today that we could even get temporary signage up."
District engineer, Emma Donohoe promised: "I will take a look at that and see what can be done. Anything of significance will be put in 2026 low cost safety schemes."
