'Pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures' is needed in Leitrim town, councillor said

Keshcarrigan

Cllr Brendan Barry asked that Leitrim County Council carry out pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures in Keshcarrigan beside Ceis Lawns on the Drumshanbo road and the Astro pitch on the Mohill road at the latest Ballinamore MD meeting.

He stated: "Residents are very concerned about pedestrian safety in the village."

The response said that "on the Drumshanbo Road, there is an existing footpath from Ceis Lawns to Gertie’s Bar, leaving a short 30 metre gap to the village centre. The feasibility of extending the footpath to the centre can be assessed. On the Mohill Road, a footpath runs from the village centre to the Old School, with a remaining 30-metre gap to the entrance of the Astro Pitch. However, due to the Old School’s close proximity to the road, land acquisition for constructing a footpath in this section is unlikely to be a viable option. There is currently a link from the Astro pitch to Main Street through a private development."

Cllr Barry said that some of the streets were so narrow that it's "not possible to put in a footpath" and said "I was more hoping for more pedestrian crossings; one of the Drumshanbo road and one on the Mohill road. A lot of the concerns are around the traffic speeds through the village."

He said a pedestrian crossing on the Mohill road "would slow traffic down".

Cllr Gary Prior supported the motion as did Cllr Enda McGloin.
