Over half a million euro in funding has been announced for a major regeneration project in South Leitrim.
The Exchange Project in Drumshanbo has been awarded €600,000 from the Department of Rural and Community Development.
The initiative will see the development of a working hub and creative studios in the town centre, with the potential to create up to 40 jobs.
The project includes the repurposing of the former Bank of Ireland building and the adjoining vacant premises on Main Street, the rebuilding of two outbuildings in the backlands, completion of the riverside walk, enhancement of the People’s Park, and improved connections to the town centre.
The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary TD, announced the further allocation of €600,000 towards the Drumshanbo development.

This funding is in addition to the €5.8m originally announced to support the transformation of the site into a mixed commercial and community working hub.
Following the tender process, Leitrim County Council sought a further allocation of funding and committed to contributing an additional €350,000 alongside previously committed funding.
Local Fine Gael Councillor Enda McGloin has warmly welcomed Minister Calleary’s announcement today, which he hopes will now allow the successful contractor on site to begin the project within the next few weeks.
“Many people have been in touch to see what was happening here, and when the work would begin,” said Cllr McGloin.
“I am confident now with the additional allocation of almost €1m from Leitrim County Council and Department funding that the work can start and allow the contractor on site without undue delay.”

He also extended his thanks to Minister Calleary, along with Sligo-Leitrim TDs Deputy Eamon Scanlon and Minister Frank Feighan.
“In conclusion, I wish to acknowledge the Leitrim County Council team of Padraic MacShera and Terry McGovern, our Chief Executive, Joseph Gilhooly who have stood behind this project from the very start.
“I look forward to seeing the construction hoarding and the hard hats on site in the not too distant future,” concluded Cllr McGloin.
