May is going to be a busy month at The Dock with a number of notable performances planned, a fantastic summer exhibition and a host of exciting educational events for young and old on offer.
The very popular Baby and Toddler mornings with artist Naomi Draper return from Tuesday May 3 between 11am and 12.30pm.
This six week long event is aimed at developing creativity and sociability of young ones under five years old.
For adults interesting in learning new skills and developing their current artistic practices there are a
number of very interesting events on offer.
A Tapestry Workshop with Frances Crow will be held on Saturday May 7 from 11am to 4pm.
Participants will be shown how to put on a warp, build the floor of a tapestry.
Weave plain, diagonal, texture and patterns.
By the end of the day you will have created your own unique woven tapestry.
A workshop on Flash playwriting: The Craft and Technique will begin on Tuesday, May 10 6-8pm and continues for 3 weeks. Led by Dr. Rhona Trench these fun and stimulating sessions on playwriting will guide you through the process of telling a story in play form in no more than 600 words.
Working From the human form, on May 14 & 15 with artist Paddy McCann from 11am to 4pm.
Paddy McCann teaches painting on the BA (Hons) Fine Art programme at Ulster University. His most recent solo exhibition 'Black Quarter' was at the MAC, Belfast 2015.
Participants are invited to bring - Paper A2 size, medium to large WILLOW charcoal, masking tape, rubbers, pencils (4+) 2b - 8b, range of acrylic paints, black ink, jars for water, artist palette, range of brushes - large to small, bristle hog and soft.
National Drawing Day takes place nationwide on Saturday, May 21 and The Dock will offer a number of family friendly events. So why not drop in for some creative fun in map making, self portraits and discover of artist’s sketch books.
The monthly Drawing at The Dock- Life drawing sessions continue on Saturday May 28 from 11 to 4pm.
In the Dock’s beautiful galleries from May 6 with Landscape Machine a collection of works by Marielle MacLeman as part of an ongoing inquiry into our relationship with landscape.
On Saturday 7th May The Dock welcomes the excellent traditional quintet Goitse back to The Dock for another night of hi energy and brilliant traditional Irish and folk music.
Recently crowned Live Ireland’s ‘Trad group of the Year’ for 2015, they have made a name for themselves as one of the most sought after bands amongst connoisseurs of Irish Traditional music cross the globe, with their performances gaining notoriety across four continents.
On Thursday, May 12 another superb group of musicians Le Vent Du Nord will take to the stage.
A driving force on the world’s folk music scene, Le Vent du Nord capture the revelry of a Saturday night kitchen party with their boundless enthusiasm and playful showmanship.
On Saturday, May 14 “Mamó: A Story of Geraldine Plunkett Dillon a one-woman show, written and performed by Isolde ÓBrolcháin Carmody which centres around the events of Easter 1916.
This play gives a unique insight into the experiences and events surrounding the Plunketts, a family that was centrally involved in the struggle for Irish independence and the establishment of a free and equal society in Ireland.
Later in the month there are two very appealing concerts.
The first on Wednesday 25th features of the finest fiddle players in Irish traditional music John Carty who will be joined on stage by his daughter Maggie.
The second is a Bealtaine Festival event with writer Brian Leyden and music from the legendary Seamie O Dowd.
‘Old Flames’ blends stories and music in a fond look at romance and courtship, house-dances, dowries and matchmaking as recollected by an earlier generation.
This show will light up a few fond memories and maybe even rekindle a romantic fire or two.
The Dock's classic cinema matinee offerings in is A Walk in the Woods, a comedy adventure starring Robert Redford and Emma Thompson on Tuesday 24th.
