Labour Party Seanad Agriculture spokesperson Senator Susan O’Keeffe has called on Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney TD to clarify when payments under the AEOS 2 scheme will be made to eligible farmers.
“The closing date for applications for the scheme was May 16th 2011. I find it unacceptable that farmers are still left in the dark as to when payments will be made. I made enquiries early this year and was informed that Easter was a likely payment date. Easter has now come and gone and the Department are still not in position to give a start date for payments,” she said.
“The scheme is for farmers that have undertaken actions which target environmental challenges, mainly halting the loss of biodiversity, contributing to the improvement of water quality and combating climate change.
“Farmers throughout the North West have made their applications and cooperated fully with the Department and need certainty as they try to manage farm budgets. I am calling on the Minister to clarify when the payments will be made to the 6,500 successful AEOS 2 applicants.”
